The Cost Effectiveness and Usefulness of the Pre-payment Computerized Dispensing System in Outpatient Pharmacy

Abstract

Recently, the order communication system (OCS) has been introduced and has proven to improve services in major hospitals. The computerized dispensing system in Samsung Medical Center has contributed an great deal in reducing the medication waiting time for the outpatients. In majority of other hospitals, prescribed medications get dispensed after a patient has paid for the medication. However, in Samsung Medical Center, medications get dispensed as soon as a physician enters the specific order into the computer. Thus medications get ready in advance minimizing the waiting time for patients. In this study, two systems in outpatient service have been compared in terms of waiting time and financial benefit. The waiting time in the Samsung Medical Center has decreased by about 12 minutes in comparison with the other hospitals. However, dispensing system before the payment as in Samsung Medical Center was less efficient in Preventing duplicate orders in advance, and some of dispensed medications were not picked up by the patients. The financial loss in terms of time and manpower amounts to 6 hrs and 0.75 person per day, respectively.
